Process Maps: Sales, different products, more boxes - Critique my map?

Q

QAMTY

Hi everybody
I´m revising my General Process map, but I´ve found some points that I don´t know how to handle, please criticize my map and advice me on this.
See the attached excel file
1 The first connection to client
Here we sell package of engineering documents then (an outside company builds the plants) and finally, we do the commissioning and start-up.
I include Project mgmt. as a support, because P.mgmt. only controls/administers the project, they don’t develop the engineering and for Purchasing is the same, because only It helps to get professional services and some materials.
2 Second connection
We also sell equipment, (bins, motors), in here, I include in the same line Purchasing, because the order is placed by that department and the information flow to the manufacturer (external)
By the same channel, finally inspection, labeling, packing and shipping, altough the last steps
From manufacturer to shipping, I´ll put only one box calling it, maybe Expediting and inspection.
And the last 2 connections:
We also sell training, for equipment maintenance and pumps repairing.
Sum it up…….
My main questions are:
First - In the first line is it ok to represent purchasing and Project mgmt. as support?
Second - Sales sells different products, but the processes are somehow different.
In your experience, is it a good practice to show all the boxes for each product In the general map?
Or can be represented in only one box all the options and be detailed in procedures?
I´m planning later to make a detailed map for each process where I´ll show the KPI´s and control variables.
Please share your experiences

Thanks

Probably not the sort of reply you were hoping for, but...

I would call your diagram a "systems map" - to me a process map is "a map of a process". I know that 50% of the Cove will disagree, and neither view is "right", but it shows how confusing words can be!

Having said that, I found your brief explanation far more valuable than the diagram (which didn't really tell me anything about your business). Will any of your staff learn anything from it that they didn't know already? If not, don't do it - your system and how you describe it is for the benefit of the business, not anyone else.

I'm in agreement with Peter. I found this be a very high level map - if you want to use the word 'process', I'd call it a macro-process map. It was almost demonstrating how your departments interact. It's rather like looking at the map of the mall layout, you get a gist of the overall flow, but don't necessarily have details on the individual stores and their functions.

From there, I'd drill down, expecting to see more detailed process maps. Example - Procurement is a macro-process. Processes may include Purchasing (requisition to invoice for materials/services), Receipt of Materials/Services, Expediting, Relationship with Suppliers and maybe Storeroom (depending on your organizational set-up). Within those processes, are process maps that are aligned with practices/activities and KPIs.

At least, that's what I'm used to working with.

Thanks Peter and Rcbeyette

Well my explanation is too long and leads to confusion.

you are right, is a macro process and is shown partially (doubts in Sales)
Here my main questions are:
If we sell different products and the products arrive to client
by follwiong different paths (crosses different processes)
Should we represent in the macro maps several boxes, each with its path?
or show one box for all the products, BUT detailing the different products
in its documented procedure or in the detailed process map?
whast is used in daily work?

Thanks
