We recently had our recertification audit by a new CB and they have issued our certificate. The scope that we have in our quality manual is:

"The scope of xxx Pty Ltd?s quality management system includes providing professional consulting engineering services in Queensland and Northern New South Wales from the xxx, xxx and xxx offices to:
? Developers
? State and Local Government
? Builders
? Architects, Surveyors, Building Designers and Town Planners

xxx provide services in the following areas;
? Civil Engineering
? Structural Engineering
? Hydraulic Engineering
? Geotechnical Engineering
? Planning & Development
? Traffic Engineering

xxx?s management system meets or exceeds the requirements set forth in the following standard, with continuing certification as an important focus:
ISO 9001:2008 ? Quality Management Systems"

The scope that's on our certificate is "The provision of consulting engineering services".

Would that seem a little vague????

This is a discussion you should have with your certification body.

It is a common practice to have a brief scope statement on your certificate. The limit I most frequently see is 15 words or less. The reason given is the limited space on the certificate and the sometimes accompanying plaque.

That said, however, it seems that best practice is to get your input as to how to shorten the scope statement, rather than for them to shorten it without your input.

What seems to me to be missing are the type of consulting engineering and what your main markets are.

If you feel the provided scope statement is inadequate, talk with them and work on how it can be shortened but still more relevant.
