Plans/Requests from Parent Company: Objectives or still plans?

Hi,

Our thermal powerplant is not a standalone company. We are in a system of several powerplants, and all have the same parent/holder company.

That parent/holder company makes Production plan for every year, for each powerplant. Some of requests are related to production of "GWh per year".

Could the planed production measured in "GWh per year" be a QMS Objective for us? In other words, are plans/requests from parent/holder company, objectives for dependant company?

If no, what about if we involve in analysis the specific consumption of energy, to produce electricty (KWh).

It's very hard for me to understand what are real KPI's.

Re: Plans/Requests from Parent Comapny: Objectives or still plans?

If your parent company truly values things like "GWh per year" and wants each of its surrogates to track for its benefit, then YES - it should be included in your objectives. All an objective really is - is something sought or aimed for. If it is a quality objective, then it is sought or aimed for quality performance - if it is an environmental objective, then it is sought or aimed for environmental performance, and so on and so forth....your parent company is obviously aiming to achieve something here.

As long as you can devise a means and time-frame for what your organization wants to achieve, and you can extrapolate the related data in a way that ends up providing value to your organization (including your parent company), anything can potentially become an objective. Whether this particular objective is related to quality or environmental performance (or both) is something you really should ask someone from your parent company about, since Co2 emissions may be a contributing factor.

To meet the Plan or target of "GWh per year" what are those significant things that the various functions or areas or departments must achieve that will help the company hit the GWh per year...
The parent / holding company can put forth a plan, like the GWh per year as you say.
What are your key processes that will make your plant hit the "GWh per year". Do you have any means to measure these. What are your indicators that will tell you that your systems are healthy. When you think on these lines you are close to understanding KPI's and establishing objectives at strategic areas that will indicate your progress is on the right course.

Yes, "GWh per year" is just one of our projected objectives, which basically means that we are capable to produce electric energy on long term, not only for few days :) The other thing is how efficient is our production (coal vs. fuel oil/masut for occasional support of combustion). That's the other kind of objective.

Whether this particular objective is related to quality or environmental performance (or both) is something you really should ask someone from your parent company about, since Co2 emissions may be a contributing factor.
SO2, CO2, NOx, ... we already track that, almost every second. Many large investments are made to meet new requirements on that field.

Yes, we have many other key processes which in practice must work hard and accurately to gain "GWh per year" in final account. Unfortunately, our QMS didn't note down real KPI's of that processes to publish objectives in "S.M.A.R.T." manner. We are working on that now :)
