I came across a deadline for getting a new 9001:2008 cert but can't seem to find it again. Does anyone know if there is a cutoff and if so what it is?

Summary:

ISO 9001:2008 certifications will not be valid after the end of September 2018.
From March 2017 all initial certifications under accreditation shall be to ISO 9001:2015.

Be aware that you will not get a full three year certificate. The ISO 9001:2008 goes into the sunset three years after publication of ISO 9001:2015. If it stays on schedule, publication is projected for September 2015, so ISO 9001:2008 will be completely dead in September 2018.

Personally, I would think it would be a mistake to certify to the old standard anytime after about six months after publication of the new standard, and that is only to allow for those that can't get organized quickly enough.

It shall be noted that the document linked in this thread is an IAF DRAFT of an Informative Document. So, because it is a draft and it is not a mandatory document, such document carries zero authoritative weight. Very likely, the IAF will end up with the same text in a Mandatory document, saying the same thing, but for those making plans based on this document, be aware that there is nothing cast in stone.

Thanks for the help everyone. I felt like we should get ISO compliant but wait for 2015 to kick in before starting certification. This deadline makes it a lot easier for me to sell that.

You can certificate your QMS by ISO 9001:2008 until September of 2015, after that you are allowed to do recertification in next two years.

After September 2018 you cn only be certified against ISO 9001:2015

Auditors will be required to audit only to ISO 9001:2015 a year before ISO 9001:2008 expires. If things stay on schedule and ISO 9001:2015 is published in September 2015, as of September 2017 auditors will not be able to audit to the old standard, ISO 9001:2008.

I think there will be 3 year transition period, which means you can do the initial certification of ISO 9001:2008 by the end of august 2015 and then you can do surveillance audits until 2018 when you'll have to do recertification against 9001:2015.
