Q

Hello Readers

One of the core business of our company is repairing mobile phones we receive from our customers. The company is going for ISO 9001:2015 certification

Will it be alright to define the scope of QMS as

'Service & repair of mobile phones'

The clauses that is not applicable for the scope is

8.3 Design & development of products & services

Also the standard refers clause 8.5 as Production & service provision. In our manual, should we refer this section as

8.5 Provision & service provision or only Service Provision

Inputs for above queries are welcome.

Thanks in advance

On the scope - you mentioned "one of the core..." what are the other ones.

Under 8.5 - the second you start reinventing or renaming the clauses - you are bringing unnecessary scrutiny to your process. Not sure on your logic to change it...

Yes - if you do not do 8.3 Design & Development then yes you could make it not applicable but you must explain why it does not apply - justification for non applicability

What does 'Service & repair of mobile phones' entail?
Who are you doing it for?
Where will you be doing it?
For what reason are the phones to be serviced or repaired?

You can call 8.3 Design & development of products & services anything you want and put it anywhere you want, it's your choice.

Hi, Besides repairing the mobile phones, our business also includes repairing other electronic goods which is not being covered under ISO. The area of repairing mobile phone is what we want to cover under 9001.

Though we are doing services and not involving any production process, can we still refer to 8.5 as Production & service provision ?

Service & Repair of mobile phones entail the following process:
1. We receive mobile phones from our customer which has defects e.g SIM not getting detected, Wifi not working etc.
2. We diagnose, identify issues and rectify those issues
3. After rectifying those, phones are sent back to the customers.

The processes involved are:

Marketing, Preservation,Purchase, Operations,post delivery activities.

We do inhouse repairing for our customers.

Still refer how? In your manual? Procedures/processes? If these aren't your terminologies why use them? Repair is repair. If your input is broken mobile phones and your output is repaired/refurbished mobile phones, your scope will be "The repair and refurbishment of mobile phones" (you may add a rider if you specialize in certain types/models/manufacturers, for example)

@Andy,

We have included in our quality manual, section 8.5 as product & service provision.

As has been stated, your scope will be fine as 'Service and repair of mobile phones' - you demonstrate a good example of where not all of the company's activities are included in the scope.

As for the name of the clauses, don't get hung up on them. You could use the manual to explain what you have done if you really want to e.g.

8.5 Production and service provision - known and referred to within the organisation as Service Provision.

You can call it anything you want. Its best to use terms you business is familiar with. Just remember a quality manual is not required under ISO 9001:2015 it your choice to have one. So you can place this process in whichever document is best for the organization.
