Surveillance Audit of 2008 before Transition Audit to ISO 9001:2015

Hello all,

My company is currently certified to ISO 9001:2008, certificate is valid till Sept. 2018 with a surveillance audit due this March.

We worked on implementing ISO 9001:2015 and want to go for a transition audit directly this month but the registrar is saying that they dont have any availability in March and would come and do both Surveillance and Transition in the same week in April.

Now my question is, when I am ready for transition, why do we need to go through a surveillance audit and spend money? Did you guys have the same experience? This seems like an absolute waste of money to me.

Best regards,

Satoshi

Most registrar have added .5 or 1.0 days to the surveillance audit just to verify that all new requirements have been met.

As far as not having enough auditors to meet your March audit dates - well, you are not alone.

Perfectly valid unless you want to pay twice the travel expenses for the sake of 2 separate audits. Either way you'll not be audited to 9001:2008 again.

Your surveillance will be to the new standard as will the transition

Hi Randy,

Sorry to dig up an old thread.

Today the Lead Assessor sent an email stating that the surveillance is for 2008 and transition is for 2015. This absolutely doesnt make any sense whatsoever to me.

Could you please clarify that it shouldn't be the case?

I don't know. But in the past our surveillance audit always turned into a "transition" audit when we moved to the revised standard. The old standard was essentially thrown out.

That is my experience too, just seems a waste of resources. My point was, this surveillance will be a waste once you do the transition. Registrar is saying that we can still keep the old cert if we don't pass the transition.

my question would be why did they do a surveillance in March when re-reg is due 6 months later?
that is very odd timing.

I don't get it, these planners have very little explanation on how/why they are doing the things the way they are doing.

I'm in the middle of a re-reg audit right as I type... it's a mess out there with many registrars. It seems there just aren't enough auditors. And some companies have so much work that they hired new schedulers who still haven't learned the ropes and that is confusing things even more.

I've been talking to former colleagues as a past job who can't even got hold of their registrar to firm up dates and the 9001 conversion audit is supposed to be this month

I completely agree. I have been trying to schedule an audit since November and I was just notified about an audit 2 weeks in advance.

Upon that, this 2008 surveillance audit is not at all making sense to me.
