Heat Treatment - Soaking time interpretation

So..the spec in question requirement is as follows:
''60 minutes minimum plus a further 60 minutes per each inch (25.4 mm) of
thickness or fraction thereof.''

My interpretation is that the soaking time will be 60 mins plus 60 mins for each inch or fraction of a inch of thickness.

Ex: Thickness 0.75'' = 2 hours / Thickness 1.25'' = 3 hours

Some of my colleagues disagree. Their interpretation is that the plus 60 minutes is for each inch or fraction of a inch over one inch

Ex: Thickness 0.75 = 1 hour / Thickness 1.25 = 2 hours

I am at the end of my arguments.

What is your take?

Drawing on my superb word problem skills from college , I see it, described by you, as:
"60 minutes minimum plus a further 60 minutes per each inch (25.4 mm) of thickness or fraction thereof."

The word additional is missing, intentional or not. Is it in the instruction and you left it out? Can you ask the originator of the instruction?
  1. It's 60 minutes even if the piece is 5 microns thick. Period. So no matter how thick, it's 60 minutes to start with.
  2. Implied is the word 'additional'. For every fractional thickness up to one inch beyond the first inch, add another 60 minutes. Otherwise, why not just say '2 hours if it is 1 inch or less' in the instruction?
That's how I would interpret this instruction, which might have been written a little better.

Hi,

Can you post the specification this is from?

If its an industry specification (.i.e AMS) then you can write the committees that revised the specifications, I have done so successfully.

If its a customer then asking them would be a consideration.

Hmmm....sorry for not posting the spec...do not want to stir the pot without need.

Thanks for replies.

My take is the interpretation we received from Nadcap auditors under AC7102.

0.75" would require 60 minutes.
1.25" would require 120 minutes.
2.00" would require 120 minutes.
2.01" would require 180 minutes.

First,60 min,Additionally, 75 min,because it is 60 min per inch.
Hope this helps
