MSA Study for a steel ruler

Hello all,
I have a question of a specific device to complete an MSA study. I hope you guys with more experience could help me.

I need to conduct MSA studies for all of my lab devices (calipers, micrometers, CMM, etc.) for an IATF mayor NC. But I have several steel rules that just have its calibration, and I do not know how I can conduct a study for them.
I do not know what type of study to use because if I use a GR&R my number of different categories is less than 5, so It fails. maybe a simple attribute kappa study??

Thanks in advance for your advice.
Best Regards.

If you attach your R&R study, I can tell for certain, but the probable cause for this is the level of resolution for the steel rule. However, if you use the rule only for inspection, and not for SPC, you don't need to worry about the ndc, only about % Tolerance. ndc is only used to assess measurement devices used for SPC.

So you're only required to do MSA studies on devices listed in your control plans. Are you steel rulers listed? Is there a way to "take them off" the control plan?

It may depend on the measurement, but here's what we did. We use a rule to do an incoming check on slit coil. It's a reference at best and has nothing to do with the end product quality. We had the rule on the control plan for years and got "busted" by an overzealous auditor. After realizing how stupid the requirement was for this application, we changed the control plan to make the incoming "inspection" reference only. Saved us a lot of headache. Good luck.

Hello Golfman25,
Thank you for answering my question. Yes, I have those rules in my CP.
Therefore I am forced to have MSA studies. My problem is that that is the only device which I can measure large tubes.

Hello Miner,
Thanks for answering my question. Do you have the reference in any AIAG manual that states that I do not need to meet the NDC if I will not use that rule for SPC?

Thanks in advance for helping.

I am currently away from my copy of the manual and will be until next week. If you search some of my previous posts on this topic, I recall having cited the section and page numbers in another post I made earlier this year.
