What is "protection" as in section 7.5.5 "Preservation of product" ?

Hi all
I am not native to English. In clause 7.5.5 ISO/TS states that preservation includes, as applicable, identification, handling, packaging, storage and protection. I cannot imagine any independent meaning for protection. I think if you identify, handle, package and storage product well, then you protect the product conformity.
But there is a feeling that says me that protection should have some other meanings more than sum of good identification, handling, packaging and storage.
Can someone help explain me with an example?
Thanks in advance.

Some products might have to be protected against light, heat and humidity, or cold temperatures, or blunt force such as impact damage or being run over by forklifts. They may also need to be protected from being messed with by people, for any number of reasons.

Good day Morteza,

You are not misinterpreting the meaning of 7.5.5. The standard is asking us to recognize the risk our processes and facilities' environment poses to our product, and take appropriate actions to mitigate the risk. Examples include:

1) Caps on male threaded fasteners, to prevent damage to the threads from impact with other fasteners or other things they come in contact with
2) Coating, packaging or other kind of containment to prevent corrosion of metals from moisture, or breakdown of plastics from prolonged exposure to sunlight.
3) While in-process, separating components to prevent their bumping against each other and marring surface finish.
4) Appropriate packing materials to ensure no damage results form delivery. Such damage could include physical damage, but also moisture.

What is your product?

Great responses so far.

The Protection belongs to type of product and could be protection against physical, chemical or mechanical damage. All this makes it an important element in "preserving" the product.

Hi Jennifer,
Have a good day, too
My organization is a manufacturer of automotive gearboxes.
According to your answer and Master Jim reply, It seems that Jim believes that protection has an independent meaning (?), but you agree with me. I think all of your great examples can be categorized in handling, packaging and storage.
Am I right?

In your product gearbox, would rusting be a potential long time effect on the product in the worst case time from your factory packaging until customer open to use ?
Have you considered the various environments through which this gearbox may be handled and transported ?
Have you considered protecting the gearbox from this in your preservation of product ?
Are there any other protection considerations so as to preserve your product and keep it fit for use ?
At 7.5.5 the standard wants you to determine these and apply necessary protection as you deem fit.

It's possible to handle, package and store something without it being adequately protected.

Perfect example, Jim.

Hence all the elements viz. identification, handling, packaging, storage and protection required for "preserving" the product. :)
