Design FMEA - Where to Start

HI All

I have another PPAP to do - but this one asks for Design FMEA

I have done 4 Process FMEAs. Slowly getting my head around it

But customers must confuse me with Design FMEA

Have no clue where to start - but more importantly

Does it really apply to us - we are in the liquid chemical formulations business

How does one do FMEA - step by step for w chemical formulation?

Please help before i blow my brains out

Monica: The DFMEA (Design FMEA) should have been done long ago - before the product ever came across your desk. I would suggest talking with your engineering/product design team and asking for their input.

This is something that (in my experience) has been reviewed with the customer and agreed to early on in the process.

Unless your customer gives you a formula and asks you to make it for them, you are designing a product. For example, a company which makes metal cleaners comes up with a formula to meet certain criteria. That is design. If a company says "We need a chemical mixture which will <enter expectations here>..." and your company comes up with a formulation, you are doing design. If your company decides that it wants a product which will <enter product features here> and formulates a solution, you are doing design.

As Ron says, a Design FMEA is typically done at the beginning of the design process. One can, of course, do one later on if one was not done initially, but it will take the people in your company who design product to do it. It isn't really something you can do on your own (assuming you are not involved in the design).

In my experience not a lot of companies did design FMEAs in the past unless it was a known customer requirement. Risk assessment is more common place these days, however.

From my PPAP training materials:

Primary types of FMEAs:

System FMEA: Used to analyze systems and subsystems in the early concept and design stages. Focuses on potential failure modes associated with the functions and interfaces of a system caused by design.

Design FMEA: Used to analyze products before they are released to production. Focuses on potential failure modes associated with the functions of a product caused by design.

Process FMEA: Used to analyze manufacturing and assembly processes. Focuses on potential failure modes associated with the functions of a product caused by design and operation.

In the program I used to work in UTC Aerospace Systems, the Design FMEA was waived because when PPAP was implemented the design phase was complete.

Oh...to help your design team. I can't recommend putting a tool into the hands of a team that doesn't understand its use, especially when it seems clear it doesn't need this tool.

I especially wouldn't give a design team a design tool. THEY are the design team...if they don't even know how to find their own tools, they are probably not a very good one, and there is a big difference between "helping" and "enabling." If you are enabling them to think of DFMEA as something to do with regulatory compliance, more's the pity.

Please explain

that's what i am trying to get out of - not doing it

the products has been designed in august last year but the design fmea was not done - we are not automotive certified company - so we dont do those with every new formulations
actually we never done one

so anyways - after some tests the customer like the product
but before it can be approved - they require long list of documents
one of each is Design FMEA


if you tell me its too late to do one now - you will make me the happiest person alive !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
