Management of production tooling

In clause 7.5.1.5 a system must exist for tool management including
storage and recovery

Does recovery here mean how the the tool returns to its storage area?
or is this more complicated.

Any one?

Howard, I take it to mean the other way around. How the tool is returned to production from storage. Does it require an inspection/test/approval or can someone just get it from storage and put it back in use. Here we may waive the qualification in certain cases but it always has to be inspected and approved before release to production.

I don't claim this is the official interpretation but it is what we do here.

Interesting topic gentlemen. I am not a tooling expert but the way we do tooling changeovers is to assess the tool at the last off part inspection(red tag tool if in need of repair), if tool is ok, we wash it at the die wash station and finally we store it away. When tool is set-up again, the only way we assess it is at first piece inspection.

The inspection when the tool comes down is maintenance and finds mechanical etc problems but should you not check it for storage problems before you reuse?

We have designated storage location and we perform a monthly audit of its up-keep(maintenance). Our problems arise from improper set-up or tool wear.
