Problems with Charting - Access Database Question

This is a little off topic for this forum but, any Access people that can help me?

I'm using Access as a non-conforming material database and I'm having trouble with a report/chart. When I run my report chart for scrap dollars it does not chart in descending order. Anyone know how to get an Access chart to sort on the "Y" axis?

Re: Access Database Question

When you constructed your query, you should choose "Ascending" for Sort for the "Y" axis. Notice, if you have another sort selection before the "Y" axis item, it will sort on the first one (to the most left). Maybe move the "Y" axis item to the far left in the query.

Does that help any?

Re: Access Database Question

The query seems to have no affect on the chart. I've found that no matter what you chart in Access it sorts everything in the chart in alphabetical or numeric order based on the "X" axis.

How did you construct your table? Do you have "auto number" in your table?

Re: Access Database Question - Problems with charting

The data is not based on a table. It is based on a query and is already sorting descending in the query, Access charting though sorts on the "Y" axis in the chart instead of sorting the data.

In the properties of your chart, next to Row Source, click the 3-dot button to open the query design. Try adding the field you want to sort on to the end of your query, sort it in descending order, but de-select the Show button.

If that doesn't work, another helpful website I use for Access questions is utteraccess.com

Re: Access Database Question - Problems with charting

I find the chart capability of Access severly limiting and frustrating. What I do is prep my data in Access, and the copy and paste the query result to an excel spreadsheet and chart from their. If you set up your Excel file well, for monthly updates you just need to refresh the Access query, and insert a new month calculation.

Add me to that list. It gives me a headache every time I attempt to figure out how to chart in Access. Haven't given up completely yet but it sure has beaten me!:frust:

The chart wizard may ask for you to define a query or table when getting started, however the chart object that is created is based on a separate query. To edit this query, select the chart object, double click the chart plot area and view the properties.

Look at the row source query...

see attached screenshot.
