What Type of Service Suppliers should be on our Approved Service Suppliers List

During a recent 3rd party surveillance audit, an Opportunity for Improvement resulted involving the assurance that outsourced service suppliers are included in the supplier evaluation process. On our crtitical suppliers list we already include suppliers of calibration services. WHAT OTHER TYPES OF SERVICE SUPPLIERS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED?

I have thought about this and have the following candidates:
1) Transportation services
2) Outside processing of manufactured items (toll manufacturing/processing)
3) Outside maintenance services (equipment repair & servicing)
4) Consulting services (engineering, quality systems, etc.)

I would greatly appreciate your input.

You've covered most of them that I thought of off the top of my head. If you use temporary employment agencies, you would probably want them addressed also.

:notme:How about your Registrar?

kiddo:lol:

Thats good enough to make the improvement point into a major non-conformance.:D

Do you mean the suppliers of Contract personnel ?

Yes.

I remember during a client's certification audit (air force base maintenance wing), the auditor was challenging their lack of authority to select suppliers. The person who was being interviewed gave them a great response:

"We can evaluate suppliers and make recommendations, but the contracting officer outside the wing makes the decisions. In fact, we selected a different registrar, but we got you instead!"

Re: Approved Service Suppliers List

I had a similar finding in a recent ISO 9001 / 13485 registration audit. The IT consultant who wrote and revises our ERP system was not an approved supplier.

As a manufacturer I think we have a pretty good handle on outside services that directly affect a part being manufactured (painting, chem film, machining, etc) and for other services (calibration, CB / registrar) but how far should this go? Does anybody know of an adivisory list of services to consider?

My heating and air conditioning service guy affects the Work Environment as specified in the ISO standards. Should he be on the list? At first I was thinking only those service that directly affect the the product but this example indirectly affects the product.

Any advice on how to catch those service providers that seem to fall through the cracks would be appreciated.

Consider any third party inspection agency who are appointed to inspect and release consignments / assemblies / parts.
