Are these precision machined diameters? If so, you would use the X hi/lo-R chart and sample 1 part at a frequency determined by your capability study. A sample of 40 parts would be meaningless, and an X-bar R chart would be a waste. It may be OK if you are not precision machining - such as drilling.
Now, unless your perpendicularity and surface finish are horrible, you also have a beta distribution on those characteristics - that is, non-normal. This is from the physical limit of 0 (perfectly smooth, perfectly perpendicular.) Again, it is difficult to understand why you would want a 40 pc sample for those characteristics. On these you might try a X-bar R chart. The only thing is the "mean" will not be centered.
