AS9100 - Are special process suppliers required to be NADCAP accredited?

We have just completed an AS9100 audit and a they are stating that we can only use NADCAP certified suppliers for heat treat, paint etc., this does not sound correct to me. Can someone verify or are the auditors wrong? TIA

Just ask whomever is telling you that to identify where is the requirement coming from. Obviously it is not in the AS9100 standard itself. Typically that would be a customer contractual requirement.

this does not sound correct to me.

Ask the auditor to relate this to a requirement. Sounds like an 'auditor preferred best practice.'

Look at your customer requirements. It may be there too, and your auditor may know that.

It is my understanding that this question was asked during the audit and no regulation verification for this requirement was provided other than a continued verbal by the auditors and their main office (I was not present during any of these questions). We will appeal as are unable to find such a requirement and it seems odd that an organization would somehow demand who a company should and should not do business with.

This was only a verbal statement, not a formal NC, correct? So what are you going to "appeal"?

Any auditor worth a grain of salt will, as part of documenting a formal NC, list in writing exactly what the requirement is. But it sounds like an auditor spoke a preference (which you did not hear with your own ears) and someone perhaps embellished what was said and got all wrapped around the axle about it.

No the verbal was related to the data/regulation, they have written this up as a major.

Just a word of caution before your appeal...make sure you review all of your Customer Requirements. When doing business with some of the OEM's like UTC, and Boeing it is flowed down in the Supplier Quality Manual.

For a quick quote:

UTC Flow down:

ASQR-01 4.1.4 "Special Process Supplier shall be certified to Nadcap AC7004 or AS/EN/JISQ 9100."

If I remember correctly, several years ago the aerospace bigwigs set out requirements for special process providers to be NADCAP certified.

I believe, however, that when a special process is required, you have to go to a supplier that's on your customer's approved list for that process. All those listed should be NADCAP certified for the process.
