Survey or Statistics on the use of OHSAS 18001 Worldwide

Does anyone know if there is a survey or statistics on the use of OHSAS 18001 worldwide - similar to the annual ISO survey that covers ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001, etc.

Thanks

The same question was asked by the same poster in 2006 in this thread and I suppose, the uncertainty still prevails as to the subscribers of OHSAS 18001.

So, we have to conclude that no statistics are available. The only way to get this data is to have Registrars/Certification Bodies collaborate in a world-wide data base system. And that my friends, would be wishful thinking. :nope: There is no reliable data available on other standards either. There have been attempts, but to no (long-term) avail.

I don't have a formal survey. But, I will observe that when I audit large tier 1 companies in automotive, they frequently or usually will have merged their safety programs and environmental programs into a single program. This is then integrated with their quality program, which we were requested to audit as one business system.

The basis for doing this was simple. The OHSAS 18001 standard is almost word-for-word identical to the ISO 14001 standard, with the changes that specific environmental terms were replaced with H&S terms. Such as "Aspects" was replaced with "Hazards."

Since the fit is so seamless, and the requirements would follow the same activities, it is easy to combine them. The systems I saw were based on either a modified ISO 14001 (E&HS rather than just E), or formally including the OHSAS 18001 standard by name. About an even split, I would say.

The OHSAS 18001 standard is always word-for-word identical to the ISO 14001 standard, with the changes that specific environmental terms were replaced with H&S terms. Such as "Aspects" was replaced with "Hazards."
As mentioned in this post, there are a couple of significant differences between the two standards. While the 2007 revision of OHSAS 18001 was deliberately planned in order to make it even more compatible with ISO 14001:2004, differences exist.

There was a typo in my post - I meant to say "almost word-for-word identical..." not "always." (I have corrected the post). Perhaps a Freudian slip...?

In any case, in the post you mention, we discussed our views adequately. I do not disrespect that both standards serve an important purpose. The need to analyze and implement the controls for both standards are very important.

However, I stand by my comment and observation that the methods to analyze and implement the controls for both standards are essentially similar, thus the documentation can be the same or similar. The two standards were clearly intended to be used in an integrated manner, and I don't see any need to try to separate that. Apparently, neither did the many companies that I alluded to.

The "OHSAS Project Group" was supposed to collect this information. Back in 2005, they had sent out this survey. In the survey document, there is a contact name and email address. You might contact that individual and ask him directly.

Good morning.

Curiosity on my part: Tigerfan51, what is your interest (company or OHS officer) to have statistics on the use of the British Standard OHSAS 18001 or any international (or national) one for MS certification ? What is the use of this information in a company ?

Regards.

No need to emphasize/add "British Standard" OHSAS 18001. It's truly an international recognized standard now. ;)
