Re: Safety at workplace

First you will need to know what you standard you will be using. Whether they are ISO or Governmental. Then you will need to know which equipment and procedures that you have that fall under those requirements. Next ensure training has been provided to appropriate personnel. As far as checklist they may have some on this site but you may need to adjust them based on your requirements.

BTW. Thanks for caring about the safety and the health of your employees.:applause:

Hope this helps some.

If your organization is serious about workplace safety, then it should take a professional approach to it, such as putting a system in place to deal with occupational health & safety. There are a number of standards out there that help any organization in developing an OHS management system. The most widely adopted standard is the OHSAS 18001 document. It's sister document, OHSAS 18002, provides guidance on the implementation of 18001.

No checklist will ever replace a robust system. Good luck to you.

Re: Safety at workplace

All above are good, but make sure you have senior management support. Without it you will fail.

I am in the process of re-vitalizing our Safety system. You are lucky in your program is new so you will not have to cross some of the same hurdles I did.

I started with the safety manual. From this I had my starting point.

The state where I live has a sister organization to OSHA for training only (they clearly state that unless it is an immediate danger, they cannot report anything to the enforcement side). They provide training (took the 'how to write a safety manual') and will come out to our plant and assist us in any safety issues. You can see if your state (or country) has a similar service.

I'm not convinced at that - a few years back, two companies we looked at had safety programs that were considered world class, with other companies coming to learn from them; upper management at both businesses was not interested at all, but it was well implemented by people that cared enough about it anyway. Once the program was getting media exposure, the big boys stepped up and took all the credit (for a program they knew very little about!).

Management support / drive is good off course. This will be more essential when you desire to be certified as a management system implementing occupation health and safety.

As a manager at your shop with absolute controls, you can do many things. Look at potentially what can happen and what has happened so far. Discuss and decide how it can be avoided. Any stuff like good house keeping, guards to rotating machines, avoiding spills and leaks, proper storage of materials and suitable use of handling equipment, defined walkways, warning and alerts, ensuring that the machines have emergency stops and where possible the machines operate with guards on / operator uses built in safety mechanisms, (and does not tamper with it and increase danger for convenience or speed of production). Keep First aid in place nearby and equip them with needed things and maintain them. Providing protective clothing, proper personnel protective equipment where necessary and inculcating discipline to use them.
b)If the company is totally new to workplace safety ,how to start to implement it .
Within your defined area, based on above and your experience, assess what are the risks and the hazards. Grade them with your own knowledge and maturity, and plan what needs to be done to address the risks. Use the below logic which the OHSAS 18k states...
a) elimination;
b) substitution;
c) engineering controls;
d) signage/warnings and/or administrative controls;
e) personal protective equipment.

If you are in Malaysia, contact the local Department of Occupational Safety and Health (JKKP) for help.

They will visit you and tell you what to do for each of your processes and machinery. Not as comprehensive as having an OHSAS 18001 system but nevertheless, a good starting point as well as meeting minimum regulatory requirements.

See if there is any laws that relate to safety in your workplace. Identify which laws or regualtions (commonly known as legisaltion or statutes) apply to your companys busienss.

Then ask 'what do we have to do to comply with each of the laws'
The answer is most likely along the lines of 'we need to have a documented way of doing this job safely that is known by each person who does the job or uspervises that task, or, we need to have a documented way of complying with this law.

After the doing the above ask yourself the question 'how could someone get hurt in this workplace and what do we need to do to prevent it from happening.'

Again, this will result in having a documented way of..... etc. You can call them procedures if you like.

You also need to have a way of assessing the risk of the event occuring and the severity of possible results of the event occuring.

hope this helps
