API Q1 Design And Development Issue

Hello, this is my first post to this forum. I have been following a few messages and posts while i attempt to learn ISO and API Q1 quality control requirements. Thank you to those who have posted info and samples, it has helped tremendously.

We are a small company currently working on moving from ISO9001:2008 to API Q1 for API 16d and 16c certification. Under ISO9001, we excluded design from our quality management system and stated that we follow "standard industry designs" and used previous design photos along with verbal instructions for assembly guidance. *Note: We photograph all units upon completion.

For API 16c and 16d, we are required to have design included in our management system, so we have implemented procedures for design and development for equipment requiring API monogramming.

My question is:
Can we implement design procedures and maintain documentation only for projects requiring API monogramming and use our old method of verbal/photo instruction or are we required to follow design procedures for all equipment being manufactured now that we are following Q1 design requirements?

Thanks for the help

That's really a question for your certification body. In the case of API Q1, that would be API. Be aware that API tends to be somewhat slow to respond.

When API is auditing you for a Monogram License, they are looking for the specific parts that are being manufactured for the Monogram License only. If you manufacture other parts that are not part of the Monogram License you should be able to exclude them from the design requirements. As part of the audit they look at the products being manufactured for the Monogram and review the design process and procedures. As part of the application process they ask that you list products that you have manufactured for the previous 4 months that will be part of the Monogram License. They will verify the design and manufacture of those products during the audit.

Hey guys,

Don't feel the need to post a new thread but just wanted to know if any one of you have obtained the API Spec. 16D monogram license? If yes, please pm me, I need help on how to go about it. Our machine shop has already obtained the API 7-1, 16A,16C and 6A licenses, is this any different? I'm really in the grey about this.

I hope I'm not going against forum policies because I'm not really posting a legitimate problem. I can explain better over a pm. Thanks.

Hi

In API Monogram Licensee audit, API auditor look for parts/ components or products must fully complied with Product technical specification right from customer enquiry, design until delivery of product to customer plus also if applicable cover your post deliveries activities such as preventive maintenance or breakdown maintenance services during the product warranty.

If you use the old methodology of doing your product design which can complied with the API Spec. Q1 and applicable API Spec product standard, then you are fine. If not you have a lot of works to do.

There are 2 parts of the API Monogram audit, normally 3-day, maybe 1-day covers general QMS system compliance to Q1 standard and 2-day covers all the technical specification for the product standard such as API Spec. 16, 17D, 6D, 6A.
