Do QC inspectors need an annual eye exam according to API Q1

I am used to working with both of the standards. Where I work now we only have a liscence for API Q1. My question is do QC inspectors need an anual eye exam according to API Q1 or is that an ISO requirement?

I have never seen any requirement like that in an ISO doc, and don't expect to.

I have done more research and it isn't in either standard. It is in ASNT TC 1-A but has always been questioned by the API auditors that I have encountered. I am not sure why they ask for this because it is a requirement for NDE inspectors. We are just a manufacturing faciality.

One of our Aerospace customers requires it along with the color blindness test. I have never been asked about it from any other source.

I have been asked by auditors but the more I look into it, they shouldn't be able to write it as a finding if we don't do it. If it is Customer driven then I guess they could write us up but not an API auditor.

I can name one example of a standard that does require it: EN 473:2008, Non-destructive Testing - Qualification and certification of NDT Personnel - General principles.

Clause 6.4 - Vision requirements - All levels:

The candidate shall provide documentary evidence of satisfactory vision in accordance with the following requirements:

a) near vision acuity shall permit reading a minimum of Jaeger number 1 or Times Roman N 4.5 or equivalent letters (having a height of 1.6 mm) at not less than 30 centimeters with one or both eyes, either corrected or uncorrected.

b) colour vision shall be sufficient that the candidate can distinguish and differentiate between the colours or shades of gray used in the NDT method concerned as specified by the employer.

The documented tests of visual acuity according to 6.4a) shall be carried out at least annually.

Now... As quite a few of our customers require us to adhere to EN 473, this requirement has been added to our management system. I expect that many other producers have the same requirement in their written procedures, and it is quite likely that some believe it to be a requirement in ISO 9001:2008, which it is not. However, in our case 7.1 & 7.2 comes into play.

Perhaps you are mixed up with the API Monogram Program (at times referred to as the API Q1 Monogram Program) which consists of the API Q1 Quality System and Product Standards. I do not think eye examination is relevant to a Quality System but has relevance to Product Standards (the visual inspection aspects).

I agree with this and stated so in one of my previous posts. I do think that it is believed to be a requirement in the manufacturing business just because a lot of Customers and auditors ask for it. I think that even auditors are confused on this because it was asked of me several times. I will go through our 7-2 spec and see if see if there are any visual requirements in that spec.

Thanks for all the good responses guys. :agree1:

Actually NDT inspection does require an annual eye exam conducted to a "Jaeger #1 test chart at not less than 12 inches, or equivalent, with one eye, natural or corrected."

I used to work in a welding process factory where the welding visual inspectores had to meet visual requirements Jaeger chart per ASNT.
