International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS) Auditor Training Requirements

Is it necessary for internal auditors to attend approved IRIS auditor training only or would Lead ISO 9001 auditor with an IRIS overview meet the requirements? Our certification body insist we attend the official course but we have a problem in the UK in that there does not appear to be any approved IRIS courses.
Has anyone else experience of the IRIS standard and how have you satisfied the requirements?

I'm not familiar with IRIS but I used to do a lot of project assurance work for LUL and Metronet. The new northern ticket hall at King's Cross station was my last big multi discipline project :)

These guys, below, provide IRIS auditor training courses in the UK and are based somewhere in the Midlands and would probably be able to guide you further.

hope that helps.

Are you in any way associated with the organizations that you recommended in your post?

Thank you for clarifying.;)

I know there are a few people in this forum that can help. IRIS has been pushed very hard by Bombardier, and is being considered the European standardby them, while here in the states most continue with AAR M1003. At the time we looked into it, SGS was not involved, although they could help us with AAR. (I am not affiliated with SGS). This may have changed by now, that was 2009. They list the portal as http://www.iris-rail.org/

i've emailed IRIS for advice but it doesn't look hopeful for training in the UK.
Pity IRIS can't provide clear internal auditor requirements.

3rd party IRIS auditors are not required to attend recognised course. Only to be Lead ISO 9001 with 4 years experience in the Rail industry.
So it is puzzling why an internal auditor needs this training.

Is it your CB requiring this training that doesn't exist? Or a specific auditor? Clearly there's a big disconnect in their understanding isn't there? Maybe you should clarify the requirement with your CB, since your search hasn't found anything and have the 'comment' withdrawn...

We were pushed hard for this by our customer , who has a vested interest in IRIS. At the time, all training was in Europe. I believe they have expanded somewhat, but not far enough to be practical. Certain countries may be under more pressure to do this than others. We were okay with ISO9001 and AAR M1003, since the (final) customers could really care less, it was just the tier 1 suppliers who were requiring it.

i have just received a reply from UNIFE who have confirmed that internal auditors do not have to attend IRIS courses only to demonstrate an understanding of the IRIS requirements. So I guess that answers that one. At least I have the email to show the IRIS auditor when he comes back in a year and will get the comment amended

We are also looking for IRIS approval in the UK. Lloyds can offer a course but no trainers in UK so they come from the European office so cost is higher and also makes the course in house rather than a general public course. The amount of material is limited so we are also looking for the awareness course which is basically the first day of the auditors course. The requirements so I'm told for the IRIS course is ISO auditor then can do the IRIS course. With no UK support also makes gap analysis more difficult plus like TS the trainer cannot be the auditor for the readiness review
