In my experience, even the most reliable organizers come up with stinkers and, rarely, those with bad reputations manage to score a happy combination of presenters, exhibitors, and attendees which make everything worthwhile.

It's been years since I have been invited to present at this type of conference, mostly because I've been turning them down since they rarely offer worthwhile compensation to an expert presenter. Most often, the presenters are folks who fall into one of two categories:

  1. consultants looking to drum up business
  2. company flacks touting a new machine or service
My advice:

  1. Learn as much as you can about the companies who may be exhibitors at such an event (these are the real financial backers.) Will they be presenting new and exciting devices or the same old hum drum stuff?
  2. Learn about the presenters and their topics. Is this information already freely available? Is the presenter truly an expert? Is it going to be merely a thinly veiled sales presentation? (You can get personalized attention by merely calling up the organization and asking a sales person to visit your own organization.)
  3. Learn about other attendees. Are they from organizations which could provide synergy to your organization? Are they from areas in the organization which make sense to mingle with?
  4. Is the cost of attending (travel, accommodation, meals, admission fee, time away from your own organization) worth the value you and your organization hope to receive?
Ultimately, discuss all these factors with the powers that be at your own organization and make an informed decision. (By the way, don't put too much stock in the reviews the company publishes on its own web site - they NEVER show the bad reviews.)

Added in edit, from the Event organizer's web page
"Raise your company profile by partnering with Vonlanthen Group as a sponsor or exhibitor at this Large Scale Event. You will benefit from an exclusive senior decision maker audience allowing you to showcase your services, provide thought leadership and enhance your reputation.

Our Business Partners Can Benefit From:

  • A Plenary Speaking Session – we will provide you with a platform to all the attendees for you to demonstrate your company profile and industry expertise
  • A Streamed Speaking Session – you will be provided with a targeted platform to showcase your solutions
  • Chairmanship – this is a great opportunity for you to align with industry practitioners and to engage in Q&A sessions Panel
  • Discussion – to moderate discussions between leading industry practitioners
  • Luncheon Sponsor – to host the conference luncheon and to have 3 tables reserved for VIP delegates
  • Evening Reception – to be the lead host of our networking drinks reception
  • Exhibition – Showcase your products and services and network with delegate and speakers during the interactive exhibition session as well as morning and afternoon breaks"
(Does this seem like anything more than an extended sales presentation opportunity for the "event sponsors?")

I would agree with Wes. Try to learn more about the event. Maybe they already had something similar events and you can check the delegate list.
Compare the information to the price and see if it is good to join.

By the way, I know that of you show interest in participation this kind of organisations may offer some discount.

Invited to attend or present? If present, it is critical to know what companies are sending attendees (are they your target market?) Will the attendees be at a level that can either recommend or purchase your product or service? What will be your net out-of-pocket cost/net gain?

If you are only going to attend and try to learn something (without buying) you are going to be lucky if you can squeeze some vacation time in Barcelona on your company's expense.

If you are truly looking to buy something, it will ultimately be better and more efficient to invite ONLY the companies you are interested in to send a rep to you to make the pitch, rather than sharing the time with other attendees who may be more attractive as a customer to the sales presenter.

If you were an employee in MY company, you'd have to make a really good
case for a benefit to the company in paying your way or giving you time off.

It occurs to me to mention that a number of individuals will be in attendance trying to sell THEMSELVES (with copies of their resumes in their tote bags crowding out the free pens and note pads from exhibitors.) As an employer, I can tell you it is not attractive to any prospective employer to see a candidate pitch for a job while traveling on his current employer's expense.
