Poka-yoke - Key Topics and Points

Mr Rotomolder

Good afternoon fellow EC members,

I have been asked to speak to a small group of colleagues regarding Poka-yoke and provide as much basic as well as useful information regarding the principles of Poka-yoke.

From a process and management perspective can anyone provide some key topics/ points that may be worthwhile discussing.

Thanks,

MR

Why on earth would you want to keep using the term "poka yoke" instead of "mistake proofing?" Introducing foreign terms for everyday good efficiency is sort of elitist in my view.

That said, the major concept of mistake proofing begins with DESIGN. Design of the product, design of the process of assembling the product, design of the process of using the product. The design of product, its production, and use works out to something like,
"What on earth can possibly go wrong? What can I do to make it harder to do that than to do the right thing?"

The need.
The thought.
The creativity.
The design.

Round pin in round hole ... 0 - 360' fit
Square pin in square hole ... 0 , 90 , 180 , 360' fit
Equilateral triangle pin in equilateral triangle hole ... 0 , 120 , 240' fit
Rectangular pin in rectangular hole ... 0 , 180' fit
Round pin with a projection in a round hole with matching notch ... Just one location fit

PokaYoke (nice to say) is a very common word for the mistake proofing or some even say idiot proofing. (You just cannot do it wrong)

You can build on this with several examples that you will get from a Google search.

Hope I have provided some food for thought ~~~
Good luck MR

Perhaps he works for a Japanese company...
if I use the term Mistake-proofing I get a blank stare for most everyone here...If I say Poka-Yoke everyone knows exactly about what I am talking.

Mr Rotomolder,

You may find this presentation of value.

I've found that by dropping the Japanese slang the subject becomes less of a mystery.

John

Is it "slang"? What about "Kaizen"? Or "Gemba"? These things are known by the name they were given. How would you simply explain (in English) an equivalent and maintain peoples' understanding?

Andy,

On this I'm guided by Dr John Grout:

...slide 9.

And I've found the Japanese terminology helps to mystify the subject. It may even up the day rate!

John

If I understand correctly, the actual term is "idiot proofing". Since we - not being native Japanese speakers - don't need to know the literal translation then, surely, the term "poke yoke" is fine. People who are mystified by terms while failing to grasp concepts and practices probably won't get it, whatever it's called!

That was baka yoke (fool proof). It was later changed to poka yoke (mistake proof) to not give offense.
