More than canned audit check-sheets? Auditing the Engineering Department

M

Mary - QA Manager

My company has moved to being an SAO (self-Auditing Org). Besides the usual canned check sheets that call out the "shall, will and must" is there another tool I can use while auditing the Engineering Dept? I will not be auditing the Manufacturing floor only in the Engineering Dept.
Thank you!

Are there metrics associated with the Engineering processes that you will be auditing? If yes, you could "score" them. The change management communication should remind them that this is not about passing/failing. This is about assessing the level of conformance and the level of target achievement. If the overall placement is not up in quadrant 1, then the process or the metrics should be reviewed.

You can use this to also show improvement in the process or, if other departments are also doing assessments, all of the results can be consolidated into one graph to show comparisons. This has the potential to spark healthy competition. :)

Yes, Mary! Your knowledge of the Engineering process, today. For clarification, we are talking about New Product Introduction or "design" Engineering, right?

So, sit down and think about what you know - or can research - about the actual process, its objectives and current performance. Once you're armed with a good understanding of the process, follow your nose! You should know all about the issues which affect the process - post launch changes, supplier issues, project over-runs - all manner of opportunities to improve...

Mary: I guess I should have asked the question(s), why are you doing this audit, and what's the tool going to give you over a canned checklist?

Perhaps what's NOT needed is another tool, but the right tool and rarely, if ever, are "canned" checklists much good. I'm not saying checklists are poor but it's more what is done to ceate the "canned" checklist, more than anything. If they are used without planning, then they won't be much use. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Checklist_Manifesto
