Re: SWOT (strengths weaknesses opportunities and threats) with QMS

1. For a start, SWOT analysis is is a structured strategic planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. It can be used at both the macro and micro level. The need for a structured method to manage quality issues such as certification to a particular ISO standard could be the result of a 'SWOT' type of strategic planning carried out at the corporate level.

2. At the lower level, it could be used as a strategic planning tool when bidding for projects or carrying out market studies or other marketing activities. Generally, a tool is only as good as the user, therefore they are usually carried out by people with the needed experience and away from the QMS.

3. I don't see how it can be used to manage a QMS as you mentioned. If you can elaborate and tell us what you are trying to achieve, we may be able to help further.

Hi Edward,
When we speak of Strengths and Weakness you are actually referring what was the internal aspects of your QMS, what is 'Inside' of your Company QMS and Opportunities and Threaths basically refer what is "Outside' of your QMS which was beyond your power to reach.
Strengths can be referred to your documents, process and procedures work instructions that are properly implemented and followed. Weakness can be referred to Personnel not following the implemented procedures. Opportunities can be refer to Continuous Improvement Programs, i.e. Kaizen, Six Sigma while Threaths can be Customer Complaint and Personnel Turn-over.
Just my brief idea.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,

Edward,
SWOT can be used to create a strategy for the company. Normally what you need is to maximize the company's strengths and opportunities and minimize your weakness and threats.
You can fill up the matrix with your own company SWOT QMS.
SWOT is one tool to create an action plan for each SWOT with regard to QMS.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Raffy

Re: SWOT (strengths weaknesses opportunities and threats) with QMS

Actually we got this requirement from our customer that we should have self-assessment in our scorecard with our sub-contractor and mill about QM such as IPQC,FQC,Raw material certificate(test report full compliance),5S....they call this" supplier quality management". So i don't know how these can associate with SWOT.

Hi Raffy,
Thank you very much for your explanation and matrix, get it we should maximize our strengths and opportunities and minimize our weakness and threats. I still can't understand why it appeared in our scorecard and should mach with our quality system. This is not an audit but i thought it just like corrective action plan we did before! we are not professional at all.

I think a SWOT analysis should be an integral part of Management Review. I also think it could be useful in supplier management. This could be helpful in looking at suppliers in general, or even an analysis of a particular supplier. It would take a little bit of modification, considering SWOT looks at both internal and external influences.
