Is it "legit" to create IMDS before Part Production?

Hi!

Our customer (an OEM which I can name if relevant/necessary) requests a preliminary IMDS entry during the project phase (no parts, no prototypes yet).

We are a Tier 1 supplier and need to receive the IMDS entries from our Tier 2's but they do not accept to make entry without producing parts, since IMDS requires part weight estimation and "real" part weight.

How should we cope with this?

then your suppliers are not complying with the requirements of the OEM. It is responsibility of your organization to flow down the OEM requirements to your Tier 2 suppliers. Lesson learned. For the future make sure that these requirements are flowed down and are part of your APQP process.

Depending on the complexity of the part and to keep moving forward, you could enter it on their behalf. If your organization is design responsible, you should have all the information you need to build a preliminary MDS.

This is a very common issue for our customer to ask for MDS submission when the target product is still in project stage -- design/drawing not fixed, no BOM.

I doubt if the raw material is still not yet confirm, if surface plating is not yet confirm, if whether protective oil should be added or not, how can we provide an accurate MDS of our product.

that was the defence of our suppliers to. somehow we managed to receive them by putting estimated weights as real weights too.

I still don't understand the request of OEM.
