Anybody in the Education Industry?

Dear Elsmarers (is there a better term?),

I used to run a school, and now find myself on the opposite end, giving advice on corporate governance to an educational services company (providing admin and operational support to a school). It sure is a very different experience altogether.

Is there anybody in the education industry here to discuss and chat about service-related issues?

I was up until about 5 years ago.

Greetings, Jennifer! So were you in education itself or in educational services? The concept of the educational services company appear to be quite confined to the international schools sector. I have yet to find such a concept in state schools and private schools. And so far, the two educational services company I know of are all owned by the same consortium that owns the corresponding international school. Interesting concept.

Education itself. I was a certified teacher working in classrooms.

Cool. I have not been actively teaching for many years. I got promoted to be an administrator within just two years of teaching in the classroom, and have been administering schools for many years, before I recently went over to "the dark side" and joined this educational services company.

Have you ever, as a teacher, encounter educational and administrative processes that you thought were simply ridiculous or crazy? Or just plain a pain in the neck?

I was an evening instructor for City University (hq in Bellevue WA, I was teaching at their Richland WA site). You'll find some discussion threads here archived on the Cove that I had MBA students participate on. Attached is the list of courses I taught. The Richland site shut down in 2006 and I have since moved away from the area. But more than happy to discuss experiences there.

Hi Steve! Glad to see someone else in the education industry (albeit higher education). Did the university you were in implement quality systems as well?

Not that I could visibly see, though I was at a branch campus. There were a few training sessions, such as getting the faculty together and having us all grade the same paper and comparing results and thought processes. There also was some plagiarizer checking software that was made available to us.

Now, as part of the business curriculum I ended up teaching several quality related courses, and interestingly the final Operations Management course that the MBA's took included Dr. Deming's 14 Points (though the version in the text was mangled beyond recognition).
