Cataract Replacement Lenses and Surgery

I have no personal experience but over the last few years about 10 friends had it done and the following is what I've learned.
1. 4 of them get it done locally, of which 2 had infections subsequently. The infection was quite bad for one of them. I understand that the blame cannot be placed squarely with the operation theater (the first that come to mind). Personal hygiene and care are other factors.
2. 1 had it done locally with another clinic and when complications arise, the doctor at the clinic had to sew it up and send him off to the government hospital as they do not have the necessary equipment to take care of the complications.
3. 3 had in done very successfully in a very specialize clinic in our capital city and you can hardly see any difference several days later.
4. Another 2 had it done in other big clinics in the capital city and suffered from complications (retinal detachment). Both were per-warned that complications do arise in a small percentage of people.
I draw the following conclusions:
a. Complications do arise. I am told the techniques use (extracapsular versus intracapsular) have a bearing on the percentage of complications. I am not sure if any of the clinics my friends go uses the old intracapsular method (entire lens removed).
b. Choice of clinic is important - do they have full facilities in case complications developed.
c. Personal hygiene and care (post operation) is critical too.

I haven't heard or read too much about complications. That seems like a very low success rate. Locally (Cincinnati, OH) it's about 99% with no complications. I'm going to pretty much have to have it done relatively soon and have been researching lens types and brands. I've gone through the tests and have a 90 day window to make the decision.
Actually, complications like retinal detachment is quite low (I was given to understand it is in the region of less than 2%). I just happen to come across these 3 cases among my friends, two of which I personally felt could had been avoided if they had done their homework. Personally, I think you have to choose the clinic carefully.
I had a look at the links you provided. I am not being biased but a one man operation has limited budget for new equipments and know how. I favor group practices which pool resources, both people/know-how and equipment. Looks like you made a good choice.

Marc was just pointing out his particular surgeon. The link says there are 45 eye doctors within the group - not one guy.

Marc...what is the exact name of this procedure?
Is it the regular lens replacement surgery or is it a new variation of it? Lasik?
I had both of my parents gone through the regular lens replacement surgery in both eyes, & everything went extremely well.
I'm in Philadelphia & the surgeon belongs to the Wills Eye Hospital.
Maybe you should seek other options/opinions...my thoughts at this time.

I had both eyes operated on several years ago but 4 years apart.
Select the focal length that suits you as you will not naturely be able to focus again. I chose a mid to long range and purchase drug store readers to manage close up work.
The first was with a solid lens made by Storz out of PMMA with a UV absorber. All went well and had no after issues.
A concern before surgery was how will I react seeing a needle coming directly into eye. This proved to be no issue except the surgeon told me off for moving my eye around the moment I could see clearly as he had not stitched the wound up.
The second was with a flexible lens made by Acrysol out of a UV absorbing acrylic.
Again no problem during the event and after except I was left with an air bubble in the sac and that would occasionly cause a twinkle when light hit it at a certain angle. For others looking at me this was a distraction but started many a conversation.
My wife also has had the procedure performed twice. So 3 surgeons and no problems
