Re: PPAP for Beginners - Where do I start?

I was actually thinking I should do a presentation and put it in .pdf

It would help me because we frequently bring on board "small shops" and the bigger companies just throw the blue books at them and say "here, read this ...."

But with limited resources, you don't have time to digest all the material, and it is good. What you need is a recipe that says 1st do this, then do that .....

If you get the blanks online (they're everywhere) you can usually get through one without a lot of guidance because they are 85% intuitive. But yes, the blue books are daunting. The MSA for example - that rascals better than 260 pages and full of lots of good theory.

But give a guy a requirement of "Get this Gage R&R done by the end of the week (in addition to your regular job)" and you have set him up for failure. I reduced down the MSA to about 15 pages saying "do this, do that, fill this out ...." and if you have questions go to the book.

Re: PPAP for Beginners - Where do I start?

Thanks again!! I am not as intimidated as I was a few days ago but I think once one person gets through the 1st run of a set, it should be a lot easier. Plus this should be done at the initial set up of the product, that's where the cost would come in, instead of doing it years later. After figuring out the PPAP process and documentation, I will be working on getting our company geared up for ISO-9001

Re: PPAP for Beginners - Where do I start?

The bottom line is this - IF you were not doing PPAPs for a customer before it was not part of the contract. IF a customer, out of the blue, says they want one, it's a contract change.

BUT - After all my years doing stuff in business, APQP is relatively standard business practice these days as are ISO 9001 requirements.

It is 2015. All companies, large and small, should be doing APQP (or parts of APQP which are appropriate to their business) and should be compliant with ISO 9001 requirements (including the *Really Not New* "risk analysis" parts).

Re: PPAP for Beginners - Where do I start?

Thank you, I sent this information to our sales department. I don't usually participate in the contract review.

Re: PPAP for Beginners - Where do I start?

That is the BIGGEST mistake I have seen through the years. Contract Review and Acceptance is your Agreement. It is the CONTRACT. It can make you or it can break you.

When a company has no SIGNIFICANT control(s) over what contracts (and, obviously, all aspects of their content) are accepted by the sales department folks (or anyone else who has that authority in the company, for that matter) is a TOTAL SETUP FOR FAILURE.

This is all about having a "robust" business system with effective internal communications.*

* = Even in small companies....

Re: PPAP for Beginners - Where do I start?

Our company does have contracts and contract review. I am part of the quality department and don't usually deal with those documents unless needed.

Thank you very much for the informative posting.
Very few people have the complete understanding of the activity & fewer still are willing to share the knowledge.
Excellent post
