Please Help! How to ensure independence and authority necessary to perform QM tasks

Hi all,

The management has to document and ensure the independence and authority necessary to perform QM tasks.

Can someone please explain what does "independence" here mean and how can we show/document it?

Thank you

Daliane

Daliane,

Your authority comes from your chief executive and is delegated verbally in open forum to you and in writing as necessary for your colleagues to be in no doubt as to the nature and extent of your authority.

It is useful for your colleagues to know that they remain responsible for process, service and product quality while you have the authority to make sure the system (your organization and itís interaction with customers and suppliers) and itís management system is helping them to deliver quality.

Objectivity and impartiality provides you (and your auditors) with the independence necessary to be effective auditors - given the necessary competence.

Other ďQM tasksĒ (before leaders realized the power of their organizations working as systems to assure quality) used to include monitoring, sampling, testing and inspection. These days monitoring, sampling, testing and inspection may be done objectively and impartially by the organizationís supervisors and operators who are kept honest and competent by the integrity of leaders and their management system.

This latter aspect depends on the QM maturity of the organization so it is best to start with objectively and impartially determining your organizationís maturity.
