Hi,

A question on awareness creation is difficult to answer. But if you want to reduce the use of paper

Consider these:

1. Control the issue of paper for printing
2. Ban the printing of articles, emails etc.
3. Ask a question: Is printing required ? What are the alternatives ?
4. Authorize only a few to print
5. Keep the printer in a central place so that one knows what gets printed (need not be the content, but the type, a photo, plan etc.)
6. Start a project on "paper less office" with clear targets; involve people who print more to be the core members
7. Sell the waste paper for recycling; let it not go to garbage (of course, confidential information should be protected by shredding the paper)
8. Ration the paper distribution for printing

If none of the above works, remove the printer. The office will still run.

There may be many more suggestions from other Cove members.

With kind regards,

Ramakrishnan

Do you insist your colleagues to use one-side printed papers wherever acceptable?

What is more printed ? Design and drawings OR Text contents, which as you say 50% goes waste ?
Many people have this habit to print and review, make pencil corrections in them and then edit the text or drawing. The review print goes a waste.
If this is the case, then use of one side printed paper will reduce to some extent.
Train your people to use the review facilities in the MS word. This is very easy and avoids a lot of draft prints for review purpose by many, which are then discarded.
Dr. LR has given many other control measures in post #2 to highlight the importance to conserve paper. See which of the combination works best and does not effect your workflow same time. Such things are a matter of practice and takes its time to sink in and show result. Whatever actions., it must be persisted with and must not look a matter of discouraging the working style.

Respectfully, I find that anytime people start banning and rationing the use of something, you don't really foster a culture where the masses buy into the process. I've found that when we work with people to get them to come up with solutions themselves, we end up not only meeting the goals, but exceeding them. Foster a culture of "reduce, reuse, recycle" and pretty soon your team will push one another to greater accomplishments. Foster a police state and all you will get is grudging compliance, and people who look for ways to beat the system.

I think you meant two-sided. Where I work the all of the network printers are set to two-sided printing as the default mode. It can be overridden on a per-job basis, but it saves a lot of paper.

Beg your pardon, I meant the re-use of papers that are already printed on one side(and no more of use) and good enough to be used for printing on the other side (instead of shredding).

By 50% wastage, do you mean that out of the 1500 sheets of paper fed to the printers, you get only 750 sheets printed and en equivalent amount is wasted (scraped or discarded) by the printer(s)? Or do you mean people are printing in excess of what's really required?

You need to go to the rrot cause to see why these are generated in the first place ? A Fishbone Diagram would be a good start :)
