This is part of an email that I received concerning ISO 50001 which will replace BS 16001:2009 Energy management systems. BS EN 16001:2009 (E) is currently the European standard for Energy management and 3rd party systems certification and is seeing some use in the USA and elsewhere.

Hi Randy,

Happy New Year!!

The latest meeting of the ISO committee was in October 2010. A new draft of the standard was prepared but it has not been released for general distribution as yet.

The final version of the standard is due to be released in June 2011
.

The following is part of the INTRODUCTION to BS 16001:2009 and will be very similar to the INTRODUCTION of ISO 50001 I have seen in the DIS.

INTRODUCTION

The overall aim of this European standard is to help organizations establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy efficiency. This should lead to reductions in cost and greenhouse gas emissions through systematic management of energy. This standard specifies requirements for an energy management system to enable an organization to develop and implement a policy and objectives which take into account legal requirements and information about significant energy aspects. It is intended to apply to all types and sizes of organizations irrespective of any geographical, cultural and social conditions. This standard applies to the activities under the control of an organization.

This standard for energy management systems can be used independently or integrated with any other management system. To facilitate its use, the structure of this standard is similar to the structure of ISO 14001
.

I've received my copy of the FDIS ISO 50001:2011(E) for review, voting has been in progess since 3/28/2011 and will end 5/28/2011.

Looks pretty good.

I am a consultant at one location of an international company which has had a global certification to ISO 14001 since it came out. What would be the benefit to such a company in pursuing ISO 50001? They already have a robust Energy Conservation program.

When its boiled down and made simple the primary benefit could be cost avoidance or reduction through energy management. Secondary benefits could of course be in GHG reduction, prevention of pollution, reduction of natural resource depletion (oil, gas, coal) all which could easily be tied to an EMS under 14001 in 4.2, 4.3.1, 4.3.3 and their supporting clauses.

Yes, they are already doing all this under their energy program within their EMS framework. Why would a corporation which already has a mature and certified program pursue 50001 in addition?

Just one question for Randy...

How does ISO 50001 drive building industry, in terms of building designs and materials used?

I think what you need to see is the underlying parts of the ISO 50001 that drive an organization to improving it control of its ongoing costs. These issues can translate to new building designs as well as manufacturing facilities upgrades. By taking into consideration their current and target energy usage as well as the Energy Utilization Index for their proposed site/building, the designer can predispose the building to one of efficency and effectiveness. The use of ISO 50001 is merely an additional step in the Green Revolution in Building design and occupancy.
These are my thoughts only. Hope they help. Be glad to discuss it further.
