Hello all !

Regarding its scope, do you consider that basically ISO 26000 standard on social responsibility is a kind of model of integrated management of companies / Safety health Environment and Quality ?

Have a nice day.

ISO 26000 is not a management system standard. It contains no guidance on quality management. So, how could it be a model for integration? It takes some abstracting capability to understand the scope of ISO 26000. Especially for people who are focused on management system standards developed with requirements in mind, such as ISO 14001, ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001, etc...

Hello !

Thank you Selena for this link.

Sidney you said ISO 26000 is not an IMS standard. But perhaps OSHMS + EMS + QMS is a good base for a compagny to drive ISO 26000...? Because I think social responsability needs OSHMS + EMS + QMS. So in this way ISO 26000 is more than an IMS...

Stijloor, it was my question : think you that ISO 26000 could be seen as a kind of IMS model (and more...) for ours compagnies ?

Sidney you said ISO 26000 is not a MS standard because It contains no guidance on quality* management. Yes, but perhaps it shows a new vision of the quality of our products, really "responsible" to consumers, a sort of "new deal" ?
* Q is NOT the only area of the compagnies regarding the social responsibility...

I am surprised you mentionned Q, E, and OSH management systems standards as if they had no connection with the international social responsability standard. Instead, these three INTERNATIONAL standards are not foreign to social responsibility: ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ILO-OSH* are quoted by ISO 26000, of course !
* but not the BS one as you have written (neither ANSI or CSA or other national OSHMS standard).

Other opinions on my question?

Regards.

No. What I said is that ISO 26000 is NOT a management system standard. And that is not my opinion. The authors of ISO 26000 made that statement and it is written in the document.

No, this is not what I said.

Of course Q, E & S are connected with social responsibility and support to sustainable development. Nevertheless, ISO 26000 fails to make the connection between robust quality management and sustainability. One of the pitfalls of ISO 26000 is exactly that. Quality from the perspective of doing it right, first time and every time, is a HUGE contributor to minimization of resource wastage, thus contributing to sustainable development. That aspect was THOROUGHLY missed by the authors of ISO 26000. A pity!!!

Worse yet it is only a guidance. There is no way to be certified to it. Basically you can have someone audit you on 26000, but you still can only use at best conform to but not certified to which you could do without an audit. I too wish they would have made it more robust. It seems to just use the same KPI's from the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) which is also a self regulation. I guess they could not get the entire world body to agree to take a stance on forced labor, child labor, workplace diversity, etc which is probably why it not an auditable standard. We would have really liked it to have been certified for our sustainability programs.:2cents:

If you remember, when I started the ISO to develop a Guidance Document on Social Responsibility - some object thread in 2004, many people voiced serious concern over a guidance document being just the precursor of a requirements/certifiable standard. ISO only managed to gain acceptance to the development of ISO 26000 because it had committed to develop something that would NOT be used for certification purposes.

Nevertheless, many organizations and stakeholders want to have means to assess their own and suppliers performance towards social responsibility and support of sustainable developments. One of the programs that offer that is the Dutch CSR Performance Ladder. If you want attend a free webinar on that, just register @ https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/653443089

Hello !

Thanks Sidney, I read you better. But one hand, regarding Quality, ISO 26000 still shows ISO 9001, and on the other hand I repeat that Quality is not the only one topic in compagnies or social responsability.

Mguilbert you said "Worse yet ISO 26000 is only a guidance". " There is no way to be certified to it". "... it is not an auditable* standard". "We would have really liked it to have been certified for our sustainability programs". It seems to me you makes a mistake reading our international standards : where is this "certification" in ours MS models ? Nowhere ! Certification IS NOT a MS standard requirement, but periodic audit IS a MS standard requirement !
* yes of course it is auditable, not certifiable but auditable...

"Guidance" or "standard" should not fool ourselves, these documents are only good practices we choose or not to use to improve our companies (these are not "requirements" within the meaning of regulation). The most important thing is not the name of the container-document, but the relevance and the substance of its contents !

The certification is external to the MS standard but uses an internal requirement of the MS standard (MS audit ). ISO 26000 as 9001, 14001 and ILO-OSH needs monitoring reviewing and improving actions ! See the § 7.7 of ISO 26000. The strength of improvement is inherent in our ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ILO-OSH standards without prescribing certification (exactly as ISO 26000). Right or wrong ? Do not confuse auditing and certification nor say or believe that a MS must necessarily be certified...

The purpose of these models of governance is not the certification, but Q, E, S or RS! If necessary (if you choose this option) certification is a detail, witch does not change the fundamentals and requirements of these voluntary standards.

Have a nice day all !
