Basic MSA - A simple way to complete an MSA study on Dial Calipers

We have done Gage R&R for years on new products, however, we have not actually done MSA's. What is a simple way to complete an MSA study on dial calipers? I've read the AIAG MSA manual and it seems overly complex. Any templates would be appreciated.

MSA is simply a collection of statistical tools to quantify specific types of measurement error.


  • Bias - this is typically checked during calibration
  • Linearity - this is bias checked throughout the entire measurement range. This can also be checked during calibration if multiple measurements are taken at each calibration level.
  • Stability - This is an SPC chart of the gage taking repeated measurements of the same standard over an extended period of time. This could be incorporated into a verification check made by the operator for a specified time period.
  • Repeatability & Reproducibility - Standard R&R study
