Sufficient measurement of length - 4:1 TUR - Basic 25ft tape measures

With products that indicates the length in mm with +/- 3 to 5 mm tolerance we have used basic 25ft tape measures with inches and metric. Problem is that I can only find them reading to 1 mm. For 4:1 TUR I would need graduations of at least .5 mm. I can't find any like that. Any ideas or suggestions?

What is the tape being used to measure?

Typically a tape of that length may have only graduations of 1mm, but the lines themselves will come close to that. The line width also needs to be accounted for in your uncertainty budget.

The metal rules with very fine markings will provide the resolution you seek I believe, but they are usually not very long and not well suited to a field environment.

Hope this helps.

Generate an error of 0.5mm in the tape exactly. You will get 0.5 marking automatically.

You may be able to find a metal rule that long with fine lines, but it is not likely to be cheap. If you get one, make sure you get an accredited cal, with actual reported uncertainty or you will be unable to calculate TUR.

Hope this helps.
