iso 9000:2005
3.6.6
correction
action to eliminate a detected nonconformity (3.6.2)
note 1 a correction can be made in conjunction with a corrective action (3.6.5).
Note 2 a correction can be, for example, rework (3.6.7) or regrade (3.6.8).

3.6.5
corrective action
action to eliminate the cause of a detected nonconformity (3.6.2) or other undesirable situation
note 1 there can be more than one cause for a nonconformity.
Note 2 corrective action is taken to prevent recurrence whereas preventive action (3.6.4) is taken to prevent
occurrence.

Re: Corrective Action

Samsung's gone right to the source and nailed it. A correction eliminates the problem, a corrective action eliminates the cause of the problem.

I should probably add that a correction will not prevent recurrence of a problem, but a corrective action will.

Correction / Corrective action / Preventive action - in reality many people confuse! / misinterpret! (In ISO 9001:2008 – no word correction)

Is there also definition for PREVENTION? (or we need to call only preventive action since it is to eliminate the potential nonconformity!)

ISO 9001:2004 - examples of source of corrective action / preventive action data consideration includes (many examples given on the page 43 & 44) but both clash each other. Say for example lesson leant from past experience (Past is how - long / old! - one day one month, one year?) - so such case is not considered as to avoid occurrence or recurrence - can we call it as preventive action /or corrective action?

There is a word in ISO 9001:2008 clause 8.2.2

The management responsible for the area being audited shall ensure that any necessary corrections and corrective actions are taken without undue delay to eliminate detected nonconformities and their causes.

And it is defined in ISO 9000:2005 (Quality management systems — Fundamentals and vocabulary)

Why not Prevention and Preventive action?

Is there also definition for PREVENTION? (Like corrections)(or we need to call only preventive action since it is to eliminate the potential nonconformity!)

Yes, 'Prevention' has also been defined in the attached page from ISO TC176-526.

For additional information, you may also refer 'ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3 (Rules for the structure and drafting of International Standards) which suggests use of following dictionary for the purpose of reference of terms used in various ISO standards:
— for English, The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary and The Concise Oxford Dictionary ;

ISO 9001:2004 - examples of source of corrective action / preventive action data consideration includes (many examples given on the page 43 & 44) but both clash each other. Say for example lesson learnt from past experience (Past is how - long / old! - one day one month, one year?) - so such case is not considered as to avoid occurrence or recurrence - can we call it as preventive action /or corrective action?

I'm pretty sure you mean ISO 9004:2000.

As for preventive actions, the subject has been discussed in detail in various threads here on Cove. However, any action taken to prevent a potential nonconformity is termed as Preventive Action.

Learning from the past (time gone by, even a day or an hour before) doesn't necessarily implies 'learning from the mistakes (nonconformances)', hence depending on the type of learning, you may have to decide which kind of action you name it, i.e. preventive or corrective.

Hope it clarifies to certain extent.
