Friends,

Here is a good magical puzzle from 'British council.org'. Can anyone fathom, how is it done?

There is no room for ifs & buts.

2. On the left hand corner of the game you will find the logo of 'British council' and at the bottom you will find the web address. I hope it is proof enough for its genunity.

I didn't doubt the authenticity for a single second Umang - I was merely having a little dig at English local council culture. :agree1:

Umang had a question on the magic part of it - how it is done ? (I hope he was not referring to how British Council did it !).
I tried out some iterations (with some misguidance too) and the file's guess was right ! How ??
I have no clue. Can anyone let me know ?

How British council did it is immaterial. My question is for experts to find out how is this manipulated!?! Any takers?

Hi Umang,

This is fairly straightforward and similar to many puzzles that rearrange numbers.

Let the starting number digits be XY.
The value is then 10X + Y.
Add the two digits = X + Y
Subtract the result from the original number so (10X + Y) - (X + Y) = 9X
Now we know that X can only be an integer from 0 to 9 since it is the tens position in the original number, hence X = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
The values of 9X can only be 0, 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81.
Look at the symbol next to these values, in all cases it is the "U with squiggle" symbol.
Regardless of which starting number you select, it will always be the same symbol.

Thanks a lot Wes for the mathematical explanation, but the sbymol changes everytime you get 36!?! (BTW I am not bad at maths) That is what I wish to know, as to how it is done???!

The catch lies there ! The file changes the symbols always.
I was able to crack the puzzle after logging off and THINKING.
The answer to the puzzle is always a multiple of 9.
The symbol changes everytime and one gets the illusion that the file is tracking your mind.
If the same symbol is repeated anyone will come to know immediately.

Wes, You put that very succinctly. I was going to explain about multiples of 9 and 10 and alot of other stuff. I know my thoughts would have been much less clear. Did you notice that they also used that symbol on some nubers that were not divisible by 9 also just to keep it from being too obvious.
