Definition Activity vs. Task - Definitions in Process Mapping and Projects

Hello,
there is my issue.
we have 4 levels or view for modeling any business:

  • Process
  • sub process
  • activity
  • Task
and the difficulty is to identify the activities and to distinguish them from the tasks.
I would be grateful if anyone could help my to so resolve this issue.
NB: forgive me my poor english :D

Re: Activity vs. Task - Definitions

Maybe this analogy might help.

Activity: Making a cup of tea

Tasks

• Fill kettle with water
• Boil water
• Warm teapot
• Spoon in tea (or add teabags) to taste
• Pour in boiling water and allow to brew for 5 minutes
• Pour brewed tea in to cup or similar
• Add milk and sugar if required to taste

Based on my understanding, different activities are performed to complete a task. Example, if Cake preparation is the task, preparing and processing right quantity of ingredients, etc constitute activities.
However, there might not be any hard and fast definition.

Hi,
nice to meet you.
A Process is the trasformation of inputs into output. The process ( of a certain complexity ) is formed of sub processes, which are composed of activities ( work to have sub processes functioning) and tasks ( piece of work assigned or done as part of one's duties. A task is a well-defined responsibility that is usually imposed by another).

To better define we can say that an activity is a part of a process or sub process that does not include any decision and for this reason it is not useful to divide furtherly. Tasks are finalized to have the activitity done according to the set requirements.
A sub process is a part of a process that include more activities and has its own attibutes in terms of objective, input and output, contributing at the same time to reach the more general objective of the process.:bigwave:

thank you guys.
but there no clear guidelines for form that we can use to identify activity.
you will have two differents process models if you send two member of your tem to the client.:nope:
theses maps are used to collect functionality requirements in business automation. therefore if you miss an activity you probably miss a requirement.:frust:

:agree1: An activity is associated with a number of tasks.

thank you for the tutorial STEVEK

We are using MEGA PROCESS as modeling tool in our company. but this is not the point. for the instructor can be wrong !
I have found some intersting papers about the subject but theirs implementation is quite challenging (see the attached file).
