Hello,

I've a plan to go into ISO auditing career and I'm new to this forum as well. Recently, I have started studying the materials related to ISO to have a basic knowledge before going for a certification.

With my 10 yrs experience in operations in various verticals, I would like to know the scope of this field. Could someone help me on this.

Welcome, Gita! We have many visitors at the Cove who are highly experienced auditors. For clarification of you request, are you considering a career as a Certification Body auditor, when you say 'ISO auditor'? Do you have experience of implementing ISO 9001 etc.? It's very valuable. As an auditor having a good grasp of what a management system, compliant to ISO 9001 involves is the best experience you can bring to an auditor's job.
Many will follow this post with advice and direction, I'm sure...

Welcome to the forum Gita ji.
Your experience will add to your career as an auditor when you take and complete the ISO9001 lead auditor training and get yourself placed with a certification body. You may have to undergo there specific training and complete certain mandays of audit training before you are to audit under a lead auditor.
The pay depends upon the certification body you choose and you must be prepared to travel major part of a month.

Hello:

My first thought is to understand what "ISO" means and what it represents from a standardization aspect. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has over 18,000 standards.

If you are referring specifically to ISO 9001, then the scope is still just about as vast. From a user stand point, ISO 9001 was written to apply to any organization in any industry. Sector specific standards (i.e. TS 16949, ISO 13485, AG9000, AS9100, TL9000....) may replace ISO 9001 for registration/certification purposes.

For ISO 9001 registration audits, auditors audit within their NACE code area of expertise. So the possibility of scope of auditing is vast but it may be limited by your area of expertise. At least this is my understanding.

"NACE Code is a pan-European classification system which groups organisations according to their business activities. It assigns a unique 5 or 6 digit code to each industry sector, for example, DA.15.83 – Manufacture of Sugar."
