Manual Inspection Tools for PCB (Populated Printed Circuit Boards)

Can anyone recommend proper inspection tools for populated printed circuit boards? We are a manufacturer of electrical/mechanical medical equipment and purchase approximately 50 boards a month so I do not want to purchase an expensive piece of automatied equipment. I was looking into the Mantis. What do you think about that?

The Mantis scopes I reviewed in a Google search appear adequate. Do you have a process defined yet that addresses required power of magnification, lighting and pass/fail criteria?

Hi
We are currently in the process of PCB Assembly. So far, we are using 50X magnification during the Incoming and Outgoing QA Process.

On the other side ... how much of this inspection you desire your EMS supplier does before sending the populated boards to you. Since you mention your products as medical equipment, what are the controls that you have planned such that the purchased populated board meets your assembly quality requirements and are also delivered tested. Does your supplier give out a set of documents for each batch that confirms meeting to your requirements.

AOI is used by the supplier's who are into the EMS and who also specialize in PCB assembly process. A good benchtop illuminated magnifier should do good and have people trained in visual inspection of PCBA. The skill is more built into the person and for a number like 50 in a month this must work well.
Take a look at any of THESE if they fit your use

Is it Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) ?

Yes. AOI can be a hugh time saver. It takes less time to set up then it does to inspect one board manually. When set up, it quickly scans the board earmarking any abnormalities for the operator to take a second look on a computer screen that displays with magnification. That allows the operator to determine if there is actually a flaw or not. Not only is it a big time saver, it also encourages much more accuraccy.

:agree: PCB Inspection is an essential element in the electronics manufacturing process. The PCB inspection enables the faults to be detected after the manufacture process is completed. As the name implies, manual inspection involves individual inspectors looking at boards or other assemblies to inspect them for problems. This approach has been proved to be costly, and yielding poor results. Before automation, it was the only way that inspection could be performed. However, Automatic or automated optical inspection is the preferred method of PCB inspection. It utilizes an optical system that takes an image of a good assembly and compares the two images to detect any faults or other issues.
