AS9100 7.3 - Prototype Design Requirements

Hello All,

My facility is currently AS9100 certified, excluding design.

A corporate design division (and one of our customers) will be manufacturing mock-up/prototype parts (samples/non-production) in the facility on their equipment. They think they can do that and not follow the AS9100 guidelines for design. Is that possible?

Thanks,
Catherine

Re: AS9100 7.3 Design requirements

Catherine a couple of questions need to be answered about your question. First are they AS9100C registered and are there any aero defense contract requirements that their design process must meet AS9100C Section 7.3?

If the answer is no, then they can use any method under their current registration. If the answer is yes, they must meet requirements of AS9100C Section 7.3 or as specified in the customer’s contract.

The other aspect is when you have two companies working together on a design, which one is actually responsible for the design and maintains the design history file. If the customer is responsible for the design your company would typically be a design input.

The design division is your customer? They can mock up prototypes however they want. What is your organization's responsibility once the prototype phase is done and they're ready to go into production?

Hi BoardGuy,

They are not certified to any standard and my facility would not add any other process to the mockup part produced. They would use their equipment and their machinist to manufacture the mockup parts. We would not purchase material, receive or ship their product either.

Thanks,
Catherine

Hi Cari,

We do not have additional processes involved with the manufacturing of their mockups.

Thanks,
Catherine

Hi Marc,

For the mockups they plan to manufacture, we will not have any involvement. Basically, they are using our space to place a machine and operate. We will not have additional processes added to their manufacturing of the parts. Not even purchasing, receiving or shipping.

Thanks,
Catherine
