A customer contacted me and showed me a fake AS9100 and ISO 9001 certificate that was sent to them for a metals distributor in Florida.
Who can we contact to report this fake certificate ?

My guess is the metals distributor is ALSO a victim in this scenario. Even ASQ members have been victimized by some of the scam artists who peddle nostrums ranging from "whitewash" certs from valid issuers who are a little greedy [or desperate] for the money to outright frauds with good publishing software making fancy certificates with zero inspection of operations based on "desk audits" of whatever paperwork the guy writing the check can provide.

Sometimes the kindest [and least litigious] course of action is to issue a "form letter" to customer and distributor saying something to the effect "We don't currently recognize the issuer of this certificate. Can you please have the issuer supply us with their bona fides to issue such certificate?"

Thank you Jim, Sidney and Wes for your responses and comments.
I examined the certificate more closely and it was actually a Certificate of compliance issued by a Consultant for ISO 9001:2000 and AS9100( no version listed) with an expiry dated April 1, 2021.
This company who states that they are compliant, also indicate on their website that they supply Boeing, GE Aviation, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.

States they are compliant and not certified? Touchy ground and some of these folks here will scream like their fannies were on fire, but, if the organization and or consultant can supply objective evidence to support that statement then there's nothing wrong with it, but "caveat emptor". The mandate for 3rd party certification will outweigh self declaration and always rests with the buyer/customer and their needs and "self-declaration" must never be mistaken as the same as an accredited 3rd party certification.

Be that as it may, I experienced POS aircraft parts/components manufactured by 100% guaranteed sources during my aviation days....Failed on inspection, installation, and even in flight (really fun and I don't recommend it).................Certification isn't an absolute guarantee either

I think the discussion and inputs from Jim, Wes et al and your inputs have completed the discussion. Might I still add something. Certification is not really a requirement of the standard. It is an organizational choice. ISO 9001 Clause 4.3 last paragraph, can be interpreted to imply a self declaration of confirming to the standard by an organization. Extending that thought further, they could approach an independent other party (not a third party/ certifying body etc.,) to conduct an internal audit for them and give them a non CB certificate of their opinion that they confirm to the standard. Just an input for you to consider. There would then be nothing wrong with it.

It is an organizational choice.
Indeed, a voluntary choice: the choice between multi-million dollar contracts and.........no contracts.

In the Aviation, Space & Defense Sector, duly recognized certification for AS9100 is a contractual requirement in the overwhelming majority of cases. One might choose not to play, obviously.

I agree. I do consult and teach AS, but my intend was not Sir to say don't stay compliant, but that it is possible the certificate they had was not by a CB? That does not make it fake or counterfeit? I do not know the details. But self confirmation is allowed by the standard. Winning contracts whatever their value may require certification and that is a different discussion and of course needs to be met.
