Standard -Machinist Handbook

Hello All,

I got a customer complaint stating that a feature(Keyways in shaft) is not made to machinist handbook. Parts are made to specified depth per print and print didn't specify to refer any machinist hand book or standard. So should I go back and tell to my customer that they need to update the print?

Thanks in Advance.

Seems pretty clear that the keyseat is to be 3/16 deep from the print. (+/- 1/32)
To avoid this in the future, I would suggest updating the mutually agreed print to include both keyseat and total height with key installed. That seems to be the critical "fitness for use" feature.
In my experience, when tolerances build to overage, the key thickness is shaved.

If your part meets the print, the customer has no standing. Machinery's Handbook (not "Machinist's") might come into play for the designer of the part, but to call it out after their apparently bad design has crashed and burned is ridiculous. Push back.
