Cypress tree in the swamp.

It looks like the water was much higher in the past, or is that the way they normally look ('white' part of the bottom of the tree)?

The high water mark was from the aftermath of hurricanes. The water can rise dramatically with coastal flooding. But, the swamp also varies greatly with tides, seasons and droughts. The one closest to where I work varies about 5 feet throughout the year. The one closest to my house, probably 5-10 feet.
