We think this walk has been in place for almost as long as the house has been here - maybe 20 or 25 years. It's time to redo it.

What do you plan to do to it? Take up all the bricks, level the ground, put in sand and re-lay the bricks? I sorta like "old" stuff like that as is.

I did exactly as you said: took up those bricks, leveled the ground, put down some more underlayment, and re-laid the bricks. Many were broken and I replaced them with some that had been left over from this original (and chimney) work, many years ago.

I like the old stuff too, but this walk is dangerous in the winter, and was made worse by collecting melting snow then icing up at the point where it joins the driveway. Last year I slipped and fell right there, and got a nasty concussion. My husband was scared... he wasted no time and yanked out the evergreen bushes on either side of this walk (they were responsible for a lot of the collecting meltoff) and I did my part by straightening out this walk.
