I did exactly as you said: took up those bricks, leveled the ground, put down some more underlayment, and re-laid the bricks. Many were broken and I replaced them with some that had been left over from this original (and chimney) work, many years ago.
I like the old stuff too, but this walk is dangerous in the winter, and was made worse by collecting melting snow then icing up at the point where it joins the driveway. Last year I slipped and fell right there, and got a nasty concussion. My husband was scared... he wasted no time and yanked out the evergreen bushes on either side of this walk (they were responsible for a lot of the collecting meltoff) and I did my part by straightening out this walk.
