AS9100D - Calibration of Dies & Tooling - Plastic Extrusion

Hello All,
I work in a small Plastics Extrusion company and we have recently been given the green light for running aerospace parts. I am responsible for the QMS and recently learned that we will need to not only calibrate measuring devices but also Dies and other tooling. I need help finding the standard / regulation and how calibration of dies and tooling must be carried out. Does anyone have any experience with calibration of dies and tooling for AS 9100?

thanks,

Nicole,

I am not aware of any AS9100 requirement to calibrate tools and dies. Do you mean verify or validate performance? What section in AS9100 are you looking at?

Hi Nicole, very important that we read the actual requirements of the AS9100D standard. As far as I can see, you are referring to the requirement that reads
Equipment, tools, and software programs used to automate, control, monitor, or measure production processes shall be validated prior to final release for production and shall be maintained.
Typical method to "validate" dies and other tooling is via the First Article Inspection process. Maintenance of dies and tooling should also be performed, including proper storage and preservation.

I cannot find anything in AS9100D that requires production dies and tooling to be "calibrated". Maybe you could clarify of how you learned that tooling and dies need to be calibrated. Did someone tell you that? Against misinformation the 4 little magic words "show me the shall" should always be used.

Good luck.

Thank you very much for that clarity. You are absolutely right. I never actually saw it in writing. I was told this by my manager and I couldn't understand HOW we would even go about calibrating Dies :vfunny:
