Corrective and preventive action (CAPA) is among the most important processes of the quality management system. It is essential in not only its traditional role of dealing with poor quality, but also with customer complaints, audit findings, and outputs of the management review meeting. It can also be used very easily to address not only deficiencies but opportunities if the opportunities are expressed as gaps between current performance and potential performance. This makes it applicable to all seven Toyota production system wastes, and not just poor quality.
The Automotive Industry Action Group's CQI-20, Effective Problem Solving, is a widely accepted and extremely effective off the shelf CAPA process. The related 8D (Eight Disciplines) approach is similar. A less formal process can, however, be used when the process owner can implement the solution on the shop floor.
