I am Sr. Manager in Quality for an online retail organization. I need to put in place a quality system for the warehouse. We are not into manufacturing but the products such as apparel, mobiles, sunglasses are bought from suppliers and then on the basis of online customer orders it is delivered. I need to setup a system where we can ensure that every product delivered is of good quality to each customer. For that I have planned to conduct 100% inspection for each product received in our warehouse to segregate good and bad products before it can be delivered to customer. Please advise if 100% inspection is the right approach or is there any other effective sampling plan that can be applied

If it is practical to do 100% inspection for each of the product you mentioned, then do so. 100% inspection or random sampling really depends on the product and risk involved. I'm sure it's not practical to check chili peppers 100%. :)

Also, you need to consider the historical performance (Have there been any problems in the past?)

Re: 100% inspection in Retail Warehouse

Welcome to the Cove.

This looks like a traditional case of QC versus QA. If cost is not a problem, you may carry on with 100% inspection but bear in mind that 100% inspection is not fool proof due to factors such as fatigue and so on.

Sooner or later, cost will catch up and you will need a better method to cut wasted manpower and time. Many passed the onus of checking to the supplier (control of out sourced processes) and carry out final inspection during the packing/shipping (out going) stage. The supplier and/or manufacturer would have to in turn control their manufacturing process to reduce low quality out put from reaching its customers like you.

I would move towards a supplier management system that allows you to certify suppliers based on their quality system. Even if the 100% inspection is 100% effective, "suffering and sorting" does not improve quality, it just minimizes the complaints from your customers. The supplier is still cheaping you defective product that your planning people have to factor into any order from the supplier so you have enough product on hand to ship to your customers when the order it.
