1040 vs. 1040 Modified Bar Stock - Material Question

I am new to the material world and was wondering if anyone could explain the term "modified". For example, we machine barstock and some of it is 1040 and other is 1040 modified. What is the difference? Does the modified have other chemical make up or processed different?

Thanks,

:)

you would need to see the test certificates for your bar stocks - that should have the detail on whether it is a chemistry or manufacturing difference eg special surface finish - without seeing the actual test certificates it is not possible to say what the differences might be

cheers

Am not sure if you are referring to 1041, 1042, 1043...............

The first 2 digits, 10XX indicate that this is plain carbon steel.
The last 2 digits indicates nominal carbon content - thus 1040 has 0.4%, 1041 with 0.41% and so on.

"Typically" in the steel industry, a grade is called modified if a customer has ordered some sort of restrictions on the chemistry requirements...i.e. there is a restriction in carbon, or silicon, or copper, etc. Sometimes this is specified for machanability, or carbon equivelency, etc. I am not sure if this is what the original poster is wanting, but from a steel industry point of view, that is what we consider a 1040 modified grade. I hope this helps.

Is there a particular standard for this?

Thanks for the info. I think this is what I was looking for. Is there a term for material that is hot rolled, but the scale is turned or ground off before it leaves the mill? Some bar stock we get is rusty and has scale, which is normally hot rolled material, but others has a processed or ground finish/luster. Basically just peeling of the scale or skin of the bar stock. Didn't know if that had a special name?

Thanks,

Well, it could be turned (a thin layer peeled off the top, but that is a cold finishing operation), or just shot blasted?
