Thanks Cindy. I can see now why your required to do uncertainty.

All of our test methods we are accredited to are either ASTM, SAE or ISO with a few generic GM ones thrown in.

Ken,

You are fortunate. Most of the ASTM's now have a Precision and Bias section, which is the MU for that method. A few of the standards actually have a section that makes sense. ASTM, like most test labs, is struggling with the MU issue.

A primer on MU specifically for test labs has been written and is in review.....once I know it is about to publish, I will post info in the book section. It is in very simple language. More than that I am not allowed to reveal just now.

Our auditor wanted us to be able to produce a process for measurement uncertainty. It was more to ensure we understood what we were supplying the customer (upon request) than to see a bunch of figures. Very similar to GR&R - most can do one but few can state the purpose. So I guess this means our cost for doing PPAP is going to be passed along to our customers - right? :biglaugh:

Yes Hershal, we are fortunate. But I have yet to read one from ASTM that makes sense.

Please do keep us informed. The paper from A2LA was the first one I have read that made sense (at least to me) Look forward to actually reading something everyone can understand.

I expect to begin our "beta" test on the primer, with several test labs, this week.

Hope to have the Primer on the street before fall.

One other note.....I and a colleague have got preliminary development on a measurement uncertainty model specifically designed for TEST labs, especially the more extreme tests like fire and wood. It is not yet ready for beta, but we are close I think.

As you know, the current MU models have come from the Metrology world.

I just ordered my copy of the new Metrology Handbook of which you and Graeme Payne contributed to. Thanks.
Rob,

I am sure that Graeme will join me in the hope that you will find a lot of benefit from the Handbook, and that it will be very useful. Please do let us know of potential improvements.

In all fairness, we were part of a team, and the team is named in the Handbook. I want to make sure that the rest of Team Metrology (our name for ourselves) is given due credit. Jay Bucher was the Editor and co-author, the other co-authors included Keith Bennett, David Brown, Chris Grachanen, Emil Hazarian, Dilip Shah, Graeme, and me.
