In this case, yes. Unfortunately, some viruses are perfectly able to infect you as soon as you open the mail they are attached to. A word of warning in that case:

If your mail client has the ability to display a preview of the mail contents: Turn that feature off! It enables such viruses to run.

Or consider another platform... (Boy! Am I mean today!)

I was inundated by 'Returned Mail' where someone had me in their address book. There were a lot that were e-mail addresses I haven't used in a couple of years.

As to anyone 'hurt' by this latest virus by e-mail attack, I'm sorry to say they deserve it. There have been so many of these in the last 2 to 3 years that anyone opening mail in a Microsoft mail program on any Microsoft OS without a virus checker with current signatures, not to mention opening an attachment from an unknown sender, should have woke up long ago.

On the Worm home front, I've been watching my PC here and the worm attacks are less frequent now but I've seen about a hundred already this morning. I run Tiny Person Firewall and I can see every attempt, where it's from, the resolved domain name when there is one to resolve, and the originating network. And I can map the IP on a world map. It is interesting in that a lot of the attacks are from withing my 'home network' (fuse.net) so there are a lot of people with personal PCs locally who still haven't gotten the word on the worm issue.

New virus

Just received this from our IS Dept:

The name of this virus is [email protected] and is a mass-mailing, network-aware worm that sends itself to all e-mail addresses it finds.

The virus will put the following message in the subject line:

So anyone who doesn't update their AV definitions every day deserves what they get? And I thought you were a compassionate liberal! :ko:

Knock on wood, but I havent seen it.
My AV software is as up to date as I have been notified, but I don't get a 'rejected' message either. I'm not looking for trouble either, hope this doesn't get me any.....

Very good Claes. Preview can be as deadly as opening the email. I had to do that some time ago. I get about 300 emails a day (most are sent directly to recycle because of message rules). I look at who the email is from and the subject line. If neither sounds valid, byebye (without opening).

Likewise... That keeps a lot of spam off my back too... and I loathe, detest and despise spammers every bit as much as virus mongers.

May their beards grow inwards and suffocate them...

1. I thought I asked you (and all others) to keep politics out of all forums except the political forum - as if my political stance was relevant here which it is not.
2. If daily virus updates come out and you don't install them, I have no sympathy for you. As far as I know it's nowhere near daily that any company releases new virus signatures for their software.
